Coco Peat / Coir Pith

Cocopeat is 100 % Organic and natural growing media, It is eco friendly and bio-degradable, Cocopeat or coir Pith is derived as a byproduct in the process of fiber extraction from the Husk of the coconut. The eco-friendly material Cocopeat is a 100% natural growing medium.

Cocopeat is dried under natural sunlight, and processed to produce various growing mechanisms. cocopeat has a highly porous material structure. Hence Coco peat can absorb large volumes of water.Generally Cocopeat can absorb water about half of its volume and 5 to 6 times its weight. Cocopeat has great oxygenation properties. That makes Cocopeat rooting solutions highly suitable for potting mixtures.

Its high lignin percentage – 31% – makes cocopeat very stable and slowly decomposing. In general it takes about 10 years to decompose. Even decomposed coir pith is used as hydroponics systems for growing roses. Cocopeat has a carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 104:1. Cocopeat can store and release nutrients to plants for long periods of time. pH value of Cocopeat ranges between 5.2 and 6.8 which is neutral to slightly acidic.

However, for horticultural use, Cocopeat products must have specific chemical and biological standards such as suitable pH-level, electrical conductivity and elemental composition. The specifications that have to be fulfilled by Cocopeat are: Density <0.1, Electrical Conductivity 90%, Expandability > 6 times of the compressed volume. Clean and high-quality coir contain natural rooting hormones and anti-fungal properties.

Cocopeat products can be mixed with fertilizers and nutrients according to the specific requirements of the plants.

coco peat or coir peat medium for fruits such as strawberry, vegetables such as pepper, cucumber, mushroom, capsicum, zucchini, tomatoes, and flowers such as lily, rose etc… Coir pith is 100% organic and natural growing media. It is a multipurpose growing medium. The horticulture industry often calls this substrate coco peat or coir peat.coir pith contains high quality of nutrients that keep the soil healthy in a natural way. It acts as a top dressing that helps maintain moisture and reconditions the soil.

Uses of coir pith

As a potting mix:

Coir pith block can be used as potting medium. It can be mixed with required fertilizers and nutrients according to the type of plant to be grown.

For mushroom growers:

Coir pith blocks are being used by a lot of mushroom growers around the world for the large scale production of edible mushrooms.

As a soil supplement:

Re-hydrated coir block mixed with soil improves water holding capacity and aeration.

For generating seeds:

Coir dust in starter containers speeds up germination and profuse rooting of the seedlings.

For tissue cultured plants:

Wetted coir brick in poly bags encourages initial growth phase of tissue cultured plants and grafted seedlings.

Benefits of Coir pith

Increased air porosity:

Coir being fibrous in nature holds many air pockets which helps the crops to root easily and profusely. This increases the surface area of root system thereby facilitating better absorption of nutrients from soil.

Good water retention:

Absorbs water rapidly and holds it for longer periods preventing desiccation of plants during hotter climates especially in tropical areas.

Eco friendly component of soil:

Coir amended soil combats bacterial and fungal infections. Coir has a plant origin and therefore 100% bio degradable. Periodical release of nutrients from coir helps to keep the soil rich for all seasons.

Reduces irrigation frequency:

Irrigation of coir-grown plants may be done at longer intervals as the moisture holding capability of coir is high. It can be reused for up to 4 years.
